Good progress

I was quite proud of myself this morning when I got up to the highest level twice without taking my pulse over 150 (that’s when I switch down and slow down as I don’t wnt to risk anything). I still managed to do over 10 Kilometers AND got my pulse down to 99 within half an hour.

This afternoon I cycled outdoors although it was quite cool.

Back indoors

Once again the weather has put a stop to my training outdoors. I managed a longer session on the exercise bike on Sundays and continue to do 30-45 minutes every morning before breakfast. I’ve also pushed up the speed and the resistance, so I’m hoping that will be enough. I am aslo hoping that April will be better than March, especially in Scotland.

Das Wetter hat mir bezüglich trainieren im Freien einen ordentlichen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. Am Sonntag, bin ich bei Regen länger auf dem Hometrainer gesessen und fahre ganz stur jeden morgen vor dem Frühstück 30-45 Minuten, wobei ich immer versuche schneller UND schwerer zu treten, in der Hoffnung, dass dies langt. Diese Jahr scheint der März zu tun, was er will, deshalb hoffe ich auf besseres Wtter in Schottland in April.

First ride outdoors

Yesterday I did a longer session of 20 kilometers on my exercise-bike. Today I did a trip of 14,5 kilometers around the village, as it has been a warm day, but there is still too much snow to cycle off-road.

Gestern bin ich auf dem Hometrainer 20 Kilometer geradelt und heute bin ich das erste Mal im Freien gefahren, leider nur eine Dorf-Runde von 14,5 Kilometer, weil es immer noch zu viel Schnee gibt, zum off-road fahren .

Training again

Unfortunately, I had to temporarily stop training due to the ‘flu. After a break of 11 days, I had obviously taken a step backwards, but I’m pleased to say that today, the 4th day back on track, I once again managed 10 kilometers whilst also increasing the resistance and used 200 calories. With only 5 weeks to go, 1/2 hour a day is still not much, but I intend to do some longer sessions once I fully get my strength back.  Outside the birds are singing and we have temperatures well above zero, so if the weather continues to be so springlike, I will hopefully be able to cycle outdoors by mid-March.

Leider musste ich wegen einer Grippe eine Trainingspause von 11 Tagen einlegen.Natürlich bedeutet dies ein Schritt zurück, aber ich freue mich zu sagen, dass ich heute am 4. Tag nach der Unterbrechung wieder 10 Kilometer bei noch höherer Widerstand geschafft habe und dabei 200 Kalorien verbraucht habe. Mit nur 5 Wochen bis zum Beginn von meiner Tour ist 1/2 Stunde pro Tag noch sehr wenig, aber ich nehme mir ganz fest vor, bald ein paar längere Einheiten zu absolvieren, sobald ich meine Kräfte wieder voll beieinander habe. Draußen singen die Vögel und wir haben schon Plus-Grade, darum wenn das Wetter weiterhin so frühlingshaft bleibt, werde ich hoffentlich Mitte März auch im Freien fahren können.

I’ve started training

Obviously January and February are not the ideal months to start training outdoors in Austria, but I don’t want to leave it until March. I started around 2 weeks ago on my exercise bike, but during the first week I was also doing cross-country skiing too. I fell on my coccyx THREE times, and although it is extremely painful  to sit on IT, I am still manage to cycle, thank goodness, as my position is more forward. I’ve started gradually, only doing about half an hour per day at the moment, but have increased the distance within this time  from about 6 to about 10 kilometers, at the same time at a higher level of resistance. So I am quite proud of myself!

Natürlich sind Jänner und Februar nicht die idealste Monate, um im Freien zu trainieren, aber ich will nicht bis März warten. Vor ca. 2 Wochen habe ich auf meinem Hometrainer begonnen, aber während der ersten Woche bin ich auch Langlaufen gegangen. Ich bin DREIMAL auf mein Steißbein gefallen und obwohl es extrem schmerzhaft ist, DARAUF zu sitzen, kann ich, Gott sei Dank, noch Radfahren, weil meine Sitzposition eher vorne ist. Ich habe sehr langsam angefangen und fahre derzeit nur eine halbe Stunde pro Tag, aber ich habe innerhalb dieser Zeit die Entfernung von ca. 6 Kilometer auf ca. 10 Kilometer gesteigert bei gleichzeitiger Erhöhung der Widerstand. Darum bin ich ganz stolz auf mich!

Next Trip Planned – JOGLE

Hi friends and supporters!

I know I have been quiet for a while – too involved with our building project.

My next trip is planned for April 2017- from John O’Groats to Land’s End. I intend taking twice as long as most people do -18 days for the approximately 1000 miles or 1500 kilometres, but after all, I will be 65 by then.

Please keep your fingers crossed that I will have reasonable weather. I hope you will again support me on Just Giving. Again I am doing it in aid of Macmillan Caring Locally.

Ich weiß, ich habe lang nichts mehr hören lassen, weil ich mit unserem Bauprojekt so beschäftigt war.

Meine nächste Tour ist für April 2017 geplant und zwar von John O’Groats to Land’s End. Ich planed doppelt so lang als die meisten Leute zu brauchen – ca. 18 Tage für die ca. 1500 Kilometer, aber ich werde bis dahin schon 65 sein.

Bitte haltet mir die Daumen, dass das Wetter einigermaßen gut sein wird und natürlich hoffe ich auf Unterstützung bei Just-Giving. Ich mache es wieder zugunsten von Macmillan Caring Locally.

White Cows/Weiße Kühe

Many of you may remember my fascination with the white cows on my trip to England 2010, first seeing them in France, then in the New Forest. This year when I got to the top of the last hill on one of my hardest days, these white cows were all staring at me.

Viele von euch werden sich an meine Fascination der weißen Kühe auf meiner Fahrt nach England 2010 erinnern – zuerst in Frankreich, dann in England. Dieses Jahr, als ich an einem meiner schwersten Tagen den letzten Hügel bezwungen hatte, warteteten diese Küche und starrten mich alle an.

The ticks and the crosses

This tour was extremely challenging: approx. 150 km. in torrential rain, severe thunderstorms,  6 punctures within the first 5 days, worn out brake-linings. The heatwave and the strong winds that had bothered me on my last 2 tours, stayed away this time, but the searching didn’t. It is especially difficult to avoid roads with heavy traffic and still to find your way. I ofen saw cycle routes and didn’t dare to take them, or I lost my way because I had missed a sign, or because there wasn’t one. There are however MANY cycle routes in Germany, some of  which are well-signposted, even including distances. For obvious reasons I didn’t like the gravel paths that had been responsible for my many punctures.

What impressed me most positively once again, were the personal encounters. I often had to ask the way and got wrong or no information but many people approached me and even accompanied me. My special memories are of Rosemarie, who changed her plans for her Sunday trip and cycled 10 kilometres with me, to ensure I went the right way and Thomas, who was on his way home from work and cycled considerably slower to show me the way. Then when we were close to his house, he asked if I MINDED him accompanying me further. He told me to continue straight on and to wait when I reach the road. Then he came on a different bicycle and not only accompanied me until we were 6 Kms. away from my accomodation, but also gave me € 5 for my charity – 10 cent per kilmetre that he had cycled (25 with me and 25 back). The owner and the caretaker of the first hotel I stayed in were also very friendly and gave me an innertube and a cycling map and the owner of the Gasthaus in Oberschöna invited me to their private barbeque, because their restaurant was closed. My Warmshowers hosts were all kind and helpful and one of them even gave me the takings from a talk he gave for my charity.

However there was one exception – the very first encounter was extremely negative. As I propped my bike up unter the awning of a closed kisok near the border, so that I could unpack the rest of my rain-gear, the owners came out and were extremely unfriendly. I should have listened to the weather forecast and then I would have known not to cycle on that day. Cyclists only leave dirt outside their kiosk!

Apart from all the lovely encounters,  the beautifulg and varyied scenery the quaint villages and the wonderful Spreewald more than made up for the trials and efforts. Although it was the shortest tour up to now, I found it the most difficult. Whether that is because of my increasing age or just due to all the tests, which were sent to me, I do not know. Neither do I know whether I will do another tour in two years, but I never say never.
