What a start! Was für ein Anfang!

I woke up at 5 a.m. (I managed about 5 hours sleep) to hear rain on the skylight. It started very, very, slowly…..

Am I going to put off my start? No, because the weather forecast for the next couple of days is not better. According to the metrologists it was supposed to be starting dry and showers later! Oh well, I’d better unpack my rain gear!

Tomorrow’s the day

Here is me in my new cycle dress, compliments of Trek! Thanks again, Stefan.

I spent most of today preparing for my trip. After packing the bike I did a trial run and went back to the Müllsprung. This is the “Kneipanlage” where you can tread water.

Here is the bike all loaded up. It feels quite heavy, but the 7,5 Kilos I’ve lost with the low-carb diet, should compensate a bit!

Let’s hope I sleep a bit better tonight – only managed 3 hours last night!

2 days left (well 1 day and 2 nights)

Today I didn’t do anything dramatic – lots of little jobs in preparation. It’s amazing how many there are of them to do! I was going to cycle this afternoon, but I stayed at home to wait for my parcel as if I hadn’t been here to sign for it, the driver would have taken it away again – my new apparel supplied by Trek, thanks to Stefan Berggren, who used to work with my Dad on the international standards committee. It arrived in less tha a week! I’ll try and find time for a foto tomorrow.  The afternoon seemed to be taken up with phone-calls and visiting. Also with my son André’s help I’m trying to set my phone up for internet phoning (VOIP). I didn’t even find time to blog until now. I also received several donations and emails wishing me luck. Many thanks again to all (see thank-you page).

This evening was spent saving all the planned stops with Ovi Maps in my new Nokia N97 mini, so that I can find the lodgings more easily when I get there.

I am really looking forward to the trip.

Den Druck spüren – Feeling the Pressure

English below.

With only 3 days to go I am starting to feel the pressure, as there have been articles in all our local newspapers and I am now on the front page of the Macmillan Website! I will do all possible not to disappoint you. Please cross your fingers for me, that all goes well.

4 days to go

Today I had a day off from cycling and planning and spent it with my husband on our golfcourse. We played 18 holes, walked a total of almost 10 kilometers and also had to think about the swing………

The weather was VERY mixed – we unpacked and donned our rain-apparel several times and put it back…….

It would be ideal cycling weather……

5 days left

Today I did various little jobs, some for my trip, like fitting the luggage rack. Then, guess what? The sun came out. So I had to go cycling after all. As I had fogotten 1 or 2 items yesterday and the small supermarket in Nassereith was already closed, I decided to go to Tarrenz.

One week to go… Noch eine Woche…

(Deutsch weiter unten)

…and I am starting to get nervous! The weather was nice yesterday but bad again today – cool and very wet. I do hope it won’t be as bad as this on my trip, even though I have bought some overshoes and protectove covers for my panniers, the front bag and even for my helmet. The problem with cycling in the rain is, of course, going uphill, when you perspire when wearing waterproof clothing and don’t know whether you’re wetter inside or out! You can use a rain-cape instead of a jacket, but then the spray from the road goes up underneath it! My husband always feels sorry for motorcyclists in the rain, but at least they can wrap up well in protective clothing!

1/2 Tschirgant tour

The weather was dry enough and I decided to go the long way round. Again it is part of the Tschirgant-Runde:

A real teaser

Kühtai didn't look like this yesterday!

The weather at the moment is what I would call English – extremely changeable. We had a lovely weekend,  but I didn’t get any cycling done, as we looked after our grandchildren. This was a refreshing chang from training and planning, which really did me good! However I had planned another big trip for yesterday and got up at 5 a.m. specially – it wasn’t raining then, although bad weather had been forecast. After a cup of tea I went upstairs to get dressed, only to hear the rain pouring down on the skylights!  So I went to the computer to do some more planning. About an hour later I realised it was dry again, so I went and got dressed, packed my picnic lunch and my raingear, put my bike in my husband’s car and set off in the general direction of Ötztal Bahnhof, where I had planned to start cycling to Kühtai – a round trip of about 90 Kilometres with a 1200 metres elevation. As I drove throught the Gurgltal, the clouds did seem to be covering the mountains, but as an optimist I carried on regardless. On joining the motorway at Imst I had to go a couple of hundred metres towards Landeck before taking the loop in the direction of Ötztal and Innsbruck. The sky there was as black as the ace of spades. My reaction was too slow to change lanes and leave the motorway again, so I went through the Roppener Tunnel. When I came out of this, it was as if the heavens had opened.  “OK, just keep going – it’s got to get better somewhere”, so I drove down to Mötz and up to Mieming, where I had considered another tour to Strassberg. But in the meantime it was raining there too and it didn’t look as thought it was going to stop all day. When I passed through Obsteig and up the Holzleiten Sattel, I was surprised to notice that the road was still dry, but it was just starting to rain and by the time I got home, it was throwing it down here too! I had been “round the Tschirgant” – a trainings route I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, but with my bike in the boot of the car!!! The weather carried on teasing me all day. Every time I realised it wa dry and considered cycling, it started to rain again. I am not afraid of getting wet (I probably will next week), but to start off in such torrential rain is really not appealing, especially when I want to go uphill. I did a “trial pack” in the evening – it looks quite good!

It didn’t rain all night, but the forecast was bad again, so I decided not to get up at 5 a.m. again this morning. At 7 it started to rain and I had a session on the exercise bike! I hope it will be dry enough this afternoon for me to cycle to my dealer in Mieming to have the bike checked over ready for the “big trip” and have the new puncture-proof tyres put on.
